I’ve had to learn that you can do all the exercise in the world to lose and maintain weight, but if you’re eating the wrong stuff, you’re just stabilizing the weight. If you do happen to lose weight, the wrong foods set you up for a rebound. I’ve done my share of crazy intense workouts, and gotten really fit for activities like running a marathon, kickboxing, and even Tahitian dancing. But being “fit” doesn’t mean the same as “weight loss” or having lost unwanted weight or improvement in body composition. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, they’re just different.
The rebound is funny thing. You might know that recreational gambler who brags about winning at a casino. Only to explain that they did win, BUT lost the winnings because they couldn’t walk away when on top. Nevertheless…”they won!” The rebound and “diets” are the same. At one point in time, probably mentioned on the podcast, I went on an Atkins diet. Mainly the induction phase. I lost a good amount of weight and felt great. Eventually I put the weight back on and it sucked. The dieters mindset is that you can go back to doing what you did before, to re-lose the weight. However how many of us fail at re-living past diet success? I have. I hear people experience the same on their own exercise and weight loss journey. It always surprises me when some of these folks, despite their failure, fall back on that way of dieting. Insane right? Like the gambler who loses the “winnings” and still claims they won!
